Fence Styles
Wood Privacy (Side‑by‑Side) Fence
A wood privacy fence uses vertical boards installed side‑by‑side with little to no gap, creating a solid wall for maximum backyard privacy. It’s usually 6 feet tall and is one of the most common choices for enclosing backyards, blocking views, and reducing noise from neighbors or streets.
Shadowbox / Board‑on‑Board Fence
A shadowbox (also called board‑on‑board or “good neighbor”) fence alternates pickets on each side of the rails, so boards overlap and the fence looks more finished from both yards. This design provides strong privacy when viewed straight on, but still allows airflow and a softer look with small gaps when viewed at an angle.
Wood Picket Fence
A wood picket fence is the classic front‑yard style with evenly spaced vertical pickets and a lower height, often around 3–4 feet. It’s used more for curb appeal and keeping kids or small pets contained than for full privacy, and it can be built with flat, dog‑ear, or decorative tops.
Split‑Rail Fence
A split‑rail fence uses horizontal rails between posts to create an open, rustic boundary, often seen on larger lots or along front property lines. It provides a visual border and keeps pets or livestock in certain areas while maintaining wide‑open views across the property.
